Class 4 Blog

20th September 2019

Since the beginning of the term, Class 4 have started their learning about the Ancient Egyptians and have been looking at the diverse world we live in. They will continue this over the next few weeks looking at how the ancient Egyptians used the River Nile to support their everyday lives and the many different relationships they might see within today’s society.

With Mrs Adams, they have been appreciating and singing different rock songs including ‘Living on a Prayer’. In science we are looking at electricity and how to be safe around it. We had an interesting discussion about how to get toast that has got stuck in the toaster out safely - all children should now be able to advise adults what to do if this happens at home. Next week we will move onto being electricians, making circuits and discovering what happens when we change the components within their circuit.

After the PE sessions, we are finding many items of clothing that has not yet been named so could you please ensure that all clothing is named so it can be returned rather than being put in the lost property. Many thanks!

Class 4 have had a creative week this week with activities ranging from making cartouches, electrical circuit to creating posters about the River Nile in Egyptian times.

We are continuing on with our music and progressing onto three notes on the recorder. In tag rugby will have been practising the skill of running forward and passing the ball backwards, which is not an easy concept to learn.

In literacy we have been tasting, designing and making our own smoothies in readiness to write explicit instructions.

Class 3 have had an exciting two weeks. They have started their buzzer games by making the base and the shape of the wire. They will continue to make these on Monday, with parental help. If all goes well they should be finished by Tuesday afternoon, ready to go home. There will be a small charge to replace the items they have used; this is likely to be £2, incredibly the buzzers costs £1.15 each!

I was extremely lucky to witness the children within their Boccia lesson on Wednesday. They all have a sound understanding of the rules and how to block other players from getting near the target. I was pleased to see team work, resilience where they continued to try their hardest game after game and amazing winning celebrations.

Finishing off their Egyptian art they have made papyrus on which their will use their knowledge of hieroglyphs to write a message to you. The question is will you be able to decode it?

It has been a long half term and the children and I are looking forward to a well-earned rest so we can be ready and willing to start the next half term. I am proud to say I am the teacher of class 4 as I have seen them develop on many areas and are becoming a class of individuals who can, if they remember, work well as a team. It is pleasing to see the children in Class 4 honouring the school’s core value of responsibility and honesty,

Well done and thank you Class 4

8th November 2019

Class 4 spent the last week of the half term writing sonnets in literacy about a firework display after extensive internet research. Please find below an example of the children’s sentences used to create one sonnet.

After a restful half term, the children have started to plan their multimedia presentation about Ancient Egypt and looked at the particle formation in solids, liquids and gases. In literacy, we have been investigating words that show the passage of time.

A Firework Sonnet

 The fireworks shine gold,

What a black sky tonight!

I like the sparklers that we hold,

The moon overhead is nice and white.

The fireworks in the sky go deep,

They go all different colours including red,

Nobody can ever get to sleep,

The fireworks crackle above my head.

I like the different colours especially the blue,

I always tell my family to take care,

Spectators always shout woo hoo,

Young children make sure you hold your teddy bear.

As much as I like the rest,

The horse tails are the very best.

The children in class 4 have enjoyed investigating what temperature is best to melt chocolate at over hot water. They have enjoyed the creative curriculum, sketching the school environment with Mrs Marsh and look forward to making, marketing and selling their Christmas gifts.

The year fours have been writing on the tables in maths during their math lessons – don’t wrry it was encouraged and it comes off!

Mrs Adam's is pleased to announce the launch of the schools crowdfunding website called Rettendon in Wonderland. Please see our website for further details.

17th January 2020

It has been an exciting fortnight in class 4, we have started learning our songs for our play, The Little Muncher, more details will follow.

In science we have been discovering how to make sound from musical instruments, recorders, drums, triangles, violin, saxophone and guitar. The children were fascinated by the rice on the drums that danced as they played it and could clearly see it vibrating. They transferred this observational skill into what vibrates on the other instruments. This week they will look at how sound travels from one place to another, this also includes rice.

After internet research last week, the children started investigating moving toys and happily spent some time predicting what linear movement different shaped cams would make. This week they will design their toy ready to start making.

During the literacy sessions, they have looked at the skills of using different words to ensure that a paragraph flows and is cohesive alongside using adventurous language to describe aliens. They will use these skills to write a non-chronological report on the planet Pandora.

31st January 2020

Practise, practise, practise! The play is looking fantastic. This morning we went on the stage for the first time, one more practice on the stage and then it is dress rehearsal to the whole school on Tuesday morning. Can you please ensure that all of the costumes are in school on Monday morning ready for our rehearsal. We look forward to seeing you all on Thursday at either 2pm or 6pm.Class 4 have also been busy making their CAM toys solving many engineering problems such as how to stop the CAM slipping.

We have also taken on the 'Daily Mile' every afternoon including the staff! The year 4's have been working with fractions in maths and discovered the golden rule, ' When finding equivalent fractions, whatever you do to the top you must do to the bottom.'

6th March 2020

I think we can all agree that the children excelled themselves in The Little Muncher. Well done Class 4.

They have all completed and evaluated their CAM toys and are ready to go home subject to a £1.50 donation to cover the cost of materials through Edu Spot. Once again the children worked tirelessly and collaboratively to make their toys work.

They have completed their science unit on sound this week with two science lessons. One on what makes a string telephone work and how to sound proof a box. The string telephones saw the children with one of the earliest mobile phones known to man; they could walk around with it! They soon discovered that the string needed to be taut for the sound to pass down it to the cup at the other end, where the particles vibrate right into the ear.

Today they looked at a variety of materials to see what would provide the best sound proofing for their room as they become teenagers. They conducted an experiment with a box, material, speaker and sound meter. Some children were shocked by the results.

All that is left for me to say is have a good half term and I hope the weather is kind to us all where ever you may be. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday 24th February with their PE kits.
